Arsenal fans have been left distraught as Mesut Ozil is getting closer to a Fenerbahce move.
The Gunners midfielder, who has endured a “toxic” saga with the club since lockdown, has reportedly agreed a three-year deal with the Turkish side.
It would bring an end to his eight-season tenure with the north London side, having arrived from Real Madrid in 2013 for £42.5million.
Making more than 250 appearances, the 32-year-old was praised throughout his time at the club for his creativity and vision that has put him on 77 assists and 44 goals.
He managed 12 games under Mikel Arteta before failing to make an appearance since lockdown, exiled from the Premier League and Europa League squads this season.
Watching Arsenal endure a season where they have not been in the top half of the league since Matchday Five, Ozil has endured his own tense saga with the club.
The midfielder hit headlines when he refused to cut his £350,000-a-week wages during lockdown while he leaked rumours of a toxic dressing room last month.
While Arteta may be glad to see the back of the midfielder, the Gunners faithful were left in distraught over the news he could soon be leaving for Turkey.
“Happy to see the end of what sadly became a very toxic situation with Ozil but sad to see the guy go,” one supporter said.
Another commented: “I will always be happy the Mesut Ozil, a football legend, played for Arsenal.
“It’s so sad to see it end like this.”
While a third could not contain their emotions, with: “Making me cry – this is not how it should end.”
And a fourth added: “One of my favourite players – but the situation was becoming too toxic.”
A fifth simply laid the blame at the club’s door, with: “Arsenal have failed Ozil.”
With Ozil leaving a £350,000 gap in the weekly wage bill, Daily Star have identified six players Arteta could bring in to replace the midfielder in north London.
