Super-agent Jorge Mendes urged Manchester United to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo last summer, it has been claimed.

Ronaldo left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in 2009 before switching allegiances to Juventus in 2018.

The 36-year-old was lined up for a sensational return to his former home, only for United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to pull the plug on a deal, it has been alleged.

Ronaldo has enjoyed relative success at Juventus, but he has been unable to deliver what the Turin club prize most – the Champions League.

Juventus were knocked out of this season's competition at the last-16 stage by Porto, leading to suggestions that Ronaldo could exit the Serie A club in the summer.

And while Ronaldo's future is the subject of much speculation, it has emerged the legendary forward could've spent this season at Old Trafford instead of with the Old Lady.

Italian football journalist Emanuele Gamba revealed to Calciomercato that United were offered the opportunity to re-sign Ronaldo last summer.

He said: "Will he leave? I think the only time there was a chance for that was last summer, and I think his staff moved in that direction.

"I believe Mendes moved to see if there were any possibilities and did not find them. I doubt that a year later, with an even older and more out of fashion Ronaldo, these possibilities will reappear."

"Essentially, Mendes had urged Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United to make a move, who both said no.

"Frankly, I don’t see the possibility of anything different happening now, at least in Europe."

Ronaldo has received heavy criticism for his role in Juve's mid-week Champions League exit.
