‘He should learn some respect before learning Italian’: AC Milan chief Paolo Maldini hits out at managerial candidate Ralf Rangnick over his demands for influence before taking the job
- AC Milan’s technical director has hit out at managerial candidate Ralf Rangnick
- The ex-player said the German needs to ‘review the general concepts of respect’
- Rangnick confirmed Milan’s approach but would want influence in certain areas
- Those demands would see a complete restructure of the Serie A side’s hierarchy
AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini has told the club’s potential new manager Ralf Rangnick to he should ‘review the general concepts of respect’.
His comments come after Rangnick made it clear he wanted to be given complete control and influence over certain areas if he were to accept any position at the club.
But Maldini has taken a dim view of Rangnick’s demands as it would mean a complete restructure of the club’s hierarchy and could possibly alter his own role at the club.
AC Milan director Paolo Maldini has told Ralf Rangnick to review the concepts of respect
The German said he would only consider taking the manager’s job if he was given full powers
‘As I have never talked to Rangnick, I don’t understand on what basis his statements are made, also because I have never been told anything by the owner,’ Maldini told news agency ANSA.
‘Some consideration, in my opinion, must be made. The German director in fact, speaking of a role with full managerial powers in both the sports and the technical areas, invades the areas in which professionals work with regular contracts.
‘So, I have some advice for him, before learning Italian, he should review the general concepts of respect, as there are colleagues who, despite the many difficulties of the moment, are trying to finish the season in a professional way, putting the good of Milan to their professional pride.’
The club’s Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis has reportedly clashed with Maldini over the situation
The former Milan defender’s own future could be in doubt if Rangnick was given total control
Milan’s Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis has reportedly clashed with Maldini over giving Rangnick full managerial powers at the club.
The former Red Bull Leipzig coach confirmed there had been an approach from Milan in an interview with German publication Mitteldeutsche Zeitung earlier this month.
He said: ‘There was an approach from Milan, but with the coronavirus outbreak, there were other things to consider.
‘I am not interested in the financial aspects. For me, it’s that I need to have a certain influence, which is not the same as power, although in some situations you need power to get things moving.’
Stefano Pioli is currently in charge at the San Siro but a run of poor form saw them fall out of the Europa League places before football was suspended in March.
