Ellis Genge to leave Leicester Tigers at the end of the season

Ellis Genge is to follow George Ford in leaving Leicester Tigers at the end of the season… with the England prop set to head home and join Bristol Bears

Leicester have been rocked by the impending departure of another England player — with Ellis Genge heading home to Bristol at the end of this season.

The 26-year-old prop has had a huge impact this season as Tigers captain — so his shock decision to return to his West Country roots is a major blow.

Leicester have swept aside all-comers this season, winning all 12 matches, but it hasn’t stopped Genge from opting to leave. He follows the example of George Ford, who is joining Sale in the summer.

The Tigers have signed World Cup-winning Springbok playmaker Handre Pollard to replace their inspirational fly-half but will struggle to recruit a player to galvanise their pack in the way Genge has.

There has been no official confirmation of which club the loosehead is joining and he has been linked with Saracens.

But Sportsmail understands Genge has been seen at Bristol’s training complex and a deal is expected to be announced imminently.

Genge, Leicester’s captain, is a huge part of what they do and will be really tough to replace

Leicester head coach Steve Borthwick said: ‘This is a personal decision for Ellis, which I know has not been easy for him and, while disappointed, we respect his reasons.

‘It has been a great privilege of mine to work with Ellis over the past five years, first with England and even more closely since I joined the club.

‘We have a long way to go this season and Ellis is fully committed to finishing his time at Leicester Tigers in the same professional, passionate way he has during his six seasons at the club.’

Genge added: ‘I’ll be forever grateful for what this club has given me.

‘The club has been amazing in understanding my reasons for this decision and I will continue to give everything I have got for the boys and the fans of Leicester Tigers for the rest of this season.’

George Ford had previously confirmed he is leaving at the end of the campaign to join Sale
