Lewis Hamilton could not believe that fellow Formula One driver Esteban Ocon completed yesterday’s Turkish Grand Prix without a pitstop, finishing with the same tyres that he started with.
A dominant performance from Hamilton’s teammate Valterri Bottas saw him secure victory in Istanbul, ahead of Red Bull pairing Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez who completed the podium in second and third.
Hamilton however was left frustrated, as the seven-time world champion was forced to settle with fifth allowing rival Verstappen to once again leapfrog him in the drivers’ standings.
The dissatisfied Englishman was less than impressed when being called in for a pitstop for a tyre change with less than 10 laps to go, and after finding out Ocon managed to complete the race unchanged Hamilton looked in shock.
When told by Canal+ that the Frenchman finished the race with no pitstop he replied: “He did?”

The seven-time world champion then fell into silence as he stared at the ground and shook his head, before adding: “I don’t know what to say. If Ocon did it then I could do it for sure.”
Following the Englishman’s pitstop he went on to drop two places, losing his spot on the podium in third and ending up finishing the race in fifth.
And Hamilton let his feelings be known when being called in for a tyre change as he was heard over the Mercedes team radio saying: “I don’t think it is man. I feel like we should stay out. I mean I’m sliding around but it’s OK so far.”
Following the stop, the Englishman was then required to fight off Pierre Gasly to remain in fifth as his anger on the radio continued : “**** man why did you give up that place?” He told his team before asking for his position in the race.

When told he was fifth Hamilton replied: “We shouldn’t have come in man… I told you. Leave it alone man.”
The seven-time world champion continued to vent his frustration at the decision to take the stop, but this time blamed himself rather than his team for ‘not following his gut’ and staying out there.
He told Sky Sports after the race: “I feel like I should have stayed out. My gut feeling was to stay out, and I feel like that’s what I should have done. So I’m frustrated in myself for not following my gut.”
Hamilton added: “It felt good to be in third and I thought if I just hold onto this, this will be a great result [starting] from 11th. This is worse, but it could be worse.”
Despite the disagreement within the Mercedes camp, boss Toto Wolff believed bringing his star driver into the pitstop was the right thing to do under the circumstances.
Wolff said: “We thought that we could maybe hang out there and finish third without stopping or, if a dry line appeared, maybe going to a soft tyre until the end.
“So we balanced between pitting, taking it very conservative fighting against Leclerc and Perez on the track for P3, or taking a little bit of a gamble and either winning or finishing third.
“Then we saw Leclerc dropping off and Lewis was dropping off and it was clear we wouldn’t make it to the end.”
