Fernando Alonso has been announced as Sebastian Vettel's replacement at Aston Martin.

The Spaniard will leave Alpine at the end of the season after signing a 'multi-year deal' with the Silverstone-based squad. Alonso had been embroiled in a contract standoff with Alpine, with the two-time world champion seeking a two-year deal while the Renault-owned team preferred a one-year contract.

And after Vettel announced he would not be continuing in the sport beyond this year, Aston Martin pounced to sign one of the biggest names in F1. A statement by the team read: “Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One Team is delighted to confirm that Fernando Alonso will join the team in 2023 on a multi-year contract.”

Alonso said: "This Aston Martin team is clearly applying the energy and commitment to win, and it is therefore one of the most exciting teams in Formula One today.

"I have known Lawrence and Lance for many years and it is very obvious that they have the ambition and passion to succeed in Formula One. I have watched as the team has systematically attracted great people with winning pedigrees, and I have become aware of the huge commitment to new facilities and resources at Silverstone.

"No one in Formula One today is demonstrating a greater vision and absolute commitment to winning, and that makes it a really exciting opportunity for me."

After two years away, which saw him race in other categories, including the World Endurance Championship, Alonso returned to F1 with Alpine, the Enstone-based team he won the world championship with in 2005 and 2006. Alonso has impressed over the last 18 months and has made it clear he wishes to continue in the sport, despite recently turning 41.

The news has been greeted with intrigue on social media, with Sky Sports commentator David Croft tweeting: “Fernando Alonso joins @AstonMartinF1 on a multi year deal – now there’s some big news to start the summer break with! No brainer for me – still one of the best on the grid, week in week out.”

The news means Alpine’s highly-rated reserve driver Oscar Piastri, the 2021 F2 champion, will almost certainly partner Esteban Ocon in the team from next season. Piastri had been linked with Williams and McLaren.
