Only one game remains to determine the national champion of the 2021 college football season. Spoiler: It’ll be an SEC team.
No. 1 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia will get a rematch of the 2021 SEC championship in the 2022 College Football Playoff championship game in Lucas Oil Stadium. It is the first time in the history of the playoff era that two teams that played in the regular season will face off again for a chance at the national championship.
That said, there is a history of teams rematching from the regular season with national title implications — just in the pre-playoff era. The most recent occurence of that is when No. 2 Alabama beat No. 1 LSU 21-0 in the 2012 BCS championship game after losing 9-6 in a 1-vs.-2 “Game of the Century.” Prior to that, Florida overcame a 24-21 loss to rival Florida State to upend the Seminoles 52-20 in the 1997 Sugar Bowl to win the championship.
Will Georgia follow that trend following its 41-24 loss to Alabama earlier in the year? Or will the Crimson Tide step up once again en route to coach Nick Saban’s seventh title at Alabama (and eighth overall)?
Only time will tell. Until we find out, here’s everything you need to know as Alabama and Georgia face off in the 2022 CFP title game:
