After a scorching hot stretch, the Patriots have finally cooled off the past two weeks. Back to back losses to in-conference rivals the Colts and Bills has them in a much more precarious position in the AFC than they were in just two weeks ago, and although they still hold the 6th seed in the conference with a 9-6 record, several teams at 8-7 are clamoring for their spot in the last two weeks this season.
Lucky for them, the Patriots are playing a team that is just trying to hit a big red reset button on this season. A win would all but guarantee the Patriots a playoff spot, and they’re going up against a team playing games in their best interest to lose. The Jaguars are 2-13 on the season, and if it ended today they would have the No. 1 overall pick. That could be very important for Jacksonville, who will be looking for a new coach this offseason after getting just over half a season from Urban Meyer.
James Robinson tore his Achilles for the Jaguars in last week’s loss to the Jets, sidelining one of the few offensive weapons Jacksonville was fielding. Trevor Lawrence has had all of the ups and downs you’d expect of a rookie quarterback, and with Bill Belichick looming, this week could be a big down. Belichick is 23-6 against rookie quarterbacks, and while the Patriots are also fielding a rookie QB in Mac Jones, Jones is asked to do far less with far more than Lawrence has been.
The Patriots head into this game 14.5-point favorites, and there’s no reason to think it should be any closer than that. The Jaguars are 0-7 on the road so far this season (they played one “road” game in London), and the Patriots tend to keep their foot on the gas. While the Patriots defense has struggled in recent weeks, giving up over 400 yards passing against Josh Allen just a week after giving up 170 rushing yards to Jonathan Taylor, the reality is the Jaguars don’t have that one player who can beat them right now.
