Sam Howell’s three touchdowns help North Carolina end Wake Forest’s perfect season

Sam Howell helped end No. 9 Wake Forest’s undefeated season.

Throwing for 213 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 104 yards and two touchdowns, Howell attempted to rekindle his Heisman hopes. He led the Tar Heels to a 58-55 win over the Demon Deacons. As Wake Forest accepts defeat from unranked UNC, their hopes of securing a spot on the college football playoff are likely gone.

Howell became UNC’s all-time leader in total offense with 10,459 yards in his career with the Tarheels. He passed Marquise Williams’ previous record of 10,423 yards. Tar Heels fans immediately stormed the field as the clock ran out.

Ty Chandler rushed for 213 yards on 22 carries and scored four touchdowns for the Tar Heels. A.J. Green led the Heels with 83 receiving yards and a third quarter touchdown.

Wake Forest and UNC have rarely played each other since ACC expansion, so the two schools decided to schedule a two-year non-conference series. The matchup marks the second consecutive year that UNC secured a victory and both UNC and Wake Forest scored over 50 points.
