Free agent Odell Beckham Jr is a ‘very real’ target for the New York Jets as they try to assemble the perfect roster for their soon-to-be quarterback Aaron Rodgers according to NFL reporter Connor Hughes.

Beckham Jr has attracted interest from teams across the league having last helped the Los Angeles Rams to Super Bowl LVI in 2021. And with the Jets eager to please Rodgers upon his imminent arrival, the electric wide receiver has emerged as a top priority for Robert Saleh’s squad.

“Sources: [Jets] interest in Odell Beckham Jr. described to me as ‘very real’.” Hughes wrote in a Tweet on Wednesday. “He and Aaron Rodgers are close and have discussed playing together in New York. Basically, Rodgers wants OBJ. With Elijah Moore gone..opening is there.”

The Jets, who finished 7-10 in a disappointing campaign last year, have set about refreshing their offence with the free agency additions of former Green Bay Packers man Allen Lazard and the pacy Mecole Hardman who join Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson. Beckham Jr would join a formidable receivers core that could vault the New York outfit into serious Super Bowl contention with Rodgers under centre.

OBJ was forced to sit out the entire 2022 season with an ACL injury he sustained in the Rams’ triumphant Super Bowl win over the Cincinnati Bengals, but did manage to rack up 44 catches for 537 yards while scoring five touchdowns in 14 games in 2021.

Earlier this month ESPN reported that Rodgers had handed the Jets a ‘wish list’ of free agents he wanted the organisation to pursue that included Beckham Jr, Lazard, Randall Cobb and tight end Marcedes Lewis. And despite the four-time MVP’s denial of such a request on his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, the Jets’ recent moves would suggest there has been some discussion on which players Rodgers would like to flank him at MetLife Stadium.

There has still been no official confirmation of Rodgers’ trade from the Packers to the Jets, though all indications point to an imminent announcement of the blockbuster transfer. Rodgers will be linking up with familiar faces when he finally joins the Jets in the shape of former Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and wide receiver Allen Lazard.
