Carlton beat Hawthorn 13.8 (86) to 9.9 (63) but the losing side had one miracle play to celebrate on the verge of halftime.
Alastair Clarkson’s men looked like they’d head into the main break down by nine points but Daniel Howe took possession on the boundary line about 52m out with a second remaining and got boot to ball just before the siren sounded.

As soon as someone made contact with the Sherrin it would be halftime, but Howe’s Hail Mary just kept going.
It bounced over the top of a contest about 25m from the sticks, then bounced over the heads of two more players before taking a wicked turn and skipping through for an impossible goal.
It meant Carlton’s lead was reduced to three and Eddie McGuire lost it in the commentary box, unable to believe his eyes.
“It’ll bounce through … for a goal! It’s a goal! I think it’s a goal!” McGuire screamed on Fox Footy’s coverage. “Howe’s kicked the most unlikely goal you’ll ever see!
“Look at the Hawthorn fans behind the goals going nuts!
“Something from nothing. It just got the best bounce, the best spin since Shane Warne was on the MCG.
“Howe about that. A magnificent goal.”
