After a slow start that involved trading field goals in the first half, Georgia came alive in the second half and then fended off a late comeback bid to beat Alabama 33-18 on Monday for the Bulldogs’ first national title since 1980.
Georgia punted on three of its first five drives and kicked field goals on the other two in the first half before ending the game with touchdowns on three of its final four drives. It also got a game-sealing, 79-yard pick-six from Kelee Ringo with 54 seconds left.

BENDER: Way-too-early preseason Top 25 for 2022
Alabama lost its top receiver in the first half when Jameson Williams went down with a knee injury His absence, plus an imposing pass rush by Georgia, led to offensive struggles for the Crimson Tide. They averaged just 4.7 yards per play, Bryce Young was sacked four times after not being sacked at all in the SEC title game against Georgia, and one of the best teams in the nation on third down went just 9 for 20 on Monday.
With the win, Georgia coach Kirby Smart avenged his team’s loss in that SEC championship game as well as the 2018 national championship game. He joins Jimbo Fisher as the only former Nick Saban assistants to beat him and is the first Georgia coach to beat Saban since Mark Richt in 2007.
