The phenomenon of celebrities trying their hand at professional sport appears to show no sign of slowing down. Logan Paul began the trend in boxing and is set to make his third appearance in the ring in the early hours of Monday morning when he takes on Floyd Mayweather.

Many have blasted the YouTuber’s attempt to become a boxer as a farce, with Mayweather widely expected to easily defeat his fellow American.

The recent mega-money bouts involving YouTube stars such as Paul have seen traditional boxers pushed away from the spoils of Pay Per View deals.

This was highlighted in particular when Josh Taylor historically defeated Jose Ramirez recently, in which the Scot unified all four of boxing’s major titles within his weight class.

But the fight was not carried by either Sky Sports or BT Sport, instead being shown an obscure fighting channel.

While many have been unhappy with Paul’s move into the boxing ring, he is far from the first celebrity to try his hand at professional sport.

Several actors have also done so, including former child-actor Frankie Muniz, who starred as the titular character in long-running sitcom Malcolm in the Middle.

But as work dried up for the American, he turned his hand to professional motorsport, signing a two-year deal with Jensen Motorsport as a driver.

The move did not go as well as hoped though, as he failed to score a point in any of the 14 races he took part in during the 2006 Formula BMW USA season.

He had slightly more success the following season, when scored 41 points in the Champ Car Atlantic Series to finish 22nd, before recently returning to acting.

While Muniz’s motorsport career was not too successful, it turned out to be a better move for Grey’s Anatomy actor Patrick Demsey.

The 55-year-old has raced for more than 10 years, even competing in several 24 Hours of Le Mans races.

While he has competed less on the track in recent years, he did finish second in the 2015 edition of the Le Mans race.

One celebrity Paul can look to for tips on fighting in the ring is actor Micky Rourke, who swapped the camera for boxing gloves 1991.

He had previously competed as an amateur in the sport, but was at the top of his Hollywood career when he turned to boxing full-time.

It was a shocking move at the time, with Rourke perhaps the biggest star so far to swap careers in attempt to become a professional sportsman.

Though he was undefeated in eight fights, injuries took a massive toll on his body, with his face requiring reconstructive surgery before he returned to acting.
