The cousin of MMA superstar Khabib Nurmagomedov, Umar, has been rushed to hospital with a suspected infection and will miss out on UFC 254.

The unbeaten 24-year-old is currently receiving treatment in Dubai after being struck down with a staph infection, which resulted in a severe fever, just a week before the showpiece.

He had been due to step into the Octagon for the first time on the preliminary cards at the event next weekend against Sergei Morozov.

The worrying early reports also claimed that the rising star was suffering with ‘flu and vomiting’.

It is understood that Morozov’s team have been told Umar has been forced to pull out and that the process is underway at the UFC to source a replacement.

The condition of Umar, the talented bantamweight, quickly raised concerns over the health of his experienced cousin.

Khabib updated his social media followers on Instagram, outlining that Umar was taken to hospital after feeling the effects of his illness while staying at a hotel across the course of several days.

Initial reports suggested that Umar may have been suffering from flu, which could have placed Khabib’s upcoming headline fight against Justin Gaethje in jeopardy.

The news that it is instead an infection, and Khabib’s post wishing his relative well, seem to point to the defence of his belt going ahead as planned on Fight Island.

Both fighters had taken part in the same training camp to gear up for their respective showdowns.

Umar has now been made to wait to make his long-awaited debut on three occasions.

He was due to fight at UFC 249 in April, only for the event to be scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic, and also stepped away in July after the death of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov – Khabib’s father and trainer.
