Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier: Dana White gives update
UFC chief Dana White has said he will meet with Khabib Nurmagomedov on Fight Island and convince the Russian to fight Conor McGregor. The 32-year-old holds an undefeated 29-0 record in the Octagon.
Khabib retired from the sport in October after defending his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje. McGregor faced The Eagle in 2018 but lost out to a round four submission.
McGregor himself retired after the fight against Khabib but made a comeback in January 2020, destroying Donald Cerrone 40 seconds into the first round. The Notorious next takes on Dustin Poirier on January 23 and a win for McGregor could be enough to tempt Khabib to make a similar career U-turn.
White, meanwhile, has said he will do all he can to make it happen.

“When I fly out there (to ‘Fight Island’), Khabib is going to be there, too. I’m going to meet with Khabib while I’m there,” he told the ‘SHOUT!’ Buffalo podcast.
“In a perfect world, if Conor wins this fight, I’d love to see the rematch with him and Khabib. It’s the biggest fight that can be made, and it’s the fight that makes sense.”
Speaking about the possibility of a rematch recently, Khabib told RT Sport: “Dana and I are in touch and did not discuss the moment with the vacant belt.
“This is because they want me to continue. This is clear – I have been in the league for nine years and have not lost.

“I have a story, a big fanbase. I don’t blame them and their desire is understandable. They persuade, I will not hide, but this is not surprising. They offer conditions and fighters, but it’s hard to surprise fighters. I finished half of the top 10 ahead of schedule.
“And so yes, I repeat: there are conditions and offers. In a couple of weeks, Dana and I will discuss all the points.”
McGregor’s trainer partner Dillon Danis, meanwhile, reckons McGregor would easily win a rematch.
“The thing is, I don’t think it would be close, I really don’t,” he said on the NELK boys live stream. “If Conor’s mindset is like how it is now, it won’t be close.
“Trust me, I know what Conor McGregor can do, ability-wise. It wouldn’t be a close fight.
“Khabib is a one-dimensional fighter, Conor would put him away within five rounds.”
McGregor has only fought once since his defeat to Khabib, destroying Donald Cerrone 40 seconds into the first round. Danis believes this is proof McGregor has what it takes to beat the Russian.
“Look at his last fight and how good he did, that fight was his fight,” he said. “With the right mindset and the right camp, it isn’t even close.
“I would bet my soul and everything I have in my possession that he would beat Khabib the second time.”
