Cormier admits McGregor could get title shot despite furious reaction

‘People might hate it but this comes down to dollars… there are different rules’: Daniel Cormier would not be shocked if No 9-ranked Conor McGregor jumps queue for title shot

  • Conor McGregor has won just one fight since 2016 but wants next title shot
  • He suffered two defeats by Dustin Poirier last year, second was a leg break
  • But Irishman has been campaigning for an opportunity against Charles Oliveira
  • It would risk upsetting fans and top contenders if McGregor jumps the queue
  • Daniel Cormier says ‘I can see a world in which it happens’, despite controversy

Daniel Cormier admits that Conor McGregor jumping the queue for a title shot ‘would upset a lot of people’ but remains a very real possibility.

The Irishman has only won one fight since 2016 but remains the biggest draw in MMA and has been campaigning for a fight with Charles Oliveira when he recovers from his broken leg.

McGregor is currently ranked No 9 in the division and there are many worthy contenders ahead of him, not least Justin Gaethje, who said he would ‘riot’ if he was overlooked in favour of the ‘Notorious’.

Daniel Cormier believes it would upset a lot of people if the UFC give McGregor the title shot

But Cormier thinks there is a genuine possibility that McGregor will be given special dispensation at the risk of infuriating the rest of the division.

‘Honestly, I really do believe that there are different rules in regards to Conor,’ the former heavyweight champion told The Schmo.

‘And people might not like it, people may hate it, but if he is healthy and he starts to chirp, Oliveira’s chirping back at him, and if there’s fan interest, I can see a world where it happens [this summer].

‘It would make so many people upset, but ultimately it comes down to dollars and cents.’

McGregor is currently out of action after breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier last July

Dana White has previously played down the chances of McGregor fighting for the belt but has never ruled it out.

He said he would have to consider it as one of the options and McGregor is likely to be ready to return in the summer.

Oliveira, unsurprisingly, also wants the fight as it remains the biggest payday available and the Brazilian might consider McGregor an easier option than Gaethje or the winner of Beneil Dariush vs Islam Makhachev.

The fallout from the top contenders, Gaethje in particular, who is a fan favourite, may not be worth it if the UFC do decide to give their prized asset what he wants.
