UFC: McGregor responds to Khabib’s comments after loss
Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier were spotted having a respectful post-fight conversation after the stunning events of UFC 257 during the early hours of Sunday morning. Poirier successfully avenged his 2014 defeat at the hands of the Irishman in emphatic fashion, sealing a second-round victory with a flurry of unanswered punches that floored his opponent and ended his hopes of a winning return to the Octagon.
McGregor was in a confident mood before the fight got underway, tweeting a message to encourage his fans to bet on a first-round knockout just hours ahead of the event.
However, he came up short when face-to-face with the American, who chipped away during the opening five minutes with a number of debilitating leg kicks.
With McGregor hurt, Poirier capitalised to end the bout midway through the second round.
The result has threatened to put an end to McGregor’s hopes of a sensational rematch with retired champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who previously claimed he would only consider a return to the UFC if he was seriously impressed during the event.
A third fight with Poirier now appears to be the likely course of action for the former two-weight title holder.

The pair have shown nothing but respect to each other in recent months, a theme that continued after the contest had ended at Abu Dhabi’s brand-new Etihad Arena.
An unusually humble McGregor sought out his victorious opponent for a chat behind the scenes to congratulate him on his victory and suggest that a trilogy fight should be the pair’s next move.
The 32-year-old’s comments were echoed by Poirier, who explained his thoughts during the bout before reciprocating McGregor’s respectful sentiments and wishing him a safe journey home.
The pair’s chat was caught on camera and posted to Twitter.

McGregor: Those leg kicks were alright! We’ll do it [fight] again!
Poirier: I know you were trying to check them. You were right. When I felt you checking them that way and I was still getting the muscle, I knew I would kick through the check.
McGregor: I heard (?), goes: ‘yep, that one was a good one’. I was like: ‘You *******’.
Poirier: Well, the ******* first one I threw was the best one!
Poirier: Hey, respect, man.
McGregor: I’m very happy for you and you’re a ******* warrior. You’ve got passion, courage, and everything it takes. [You showed] a lot of courage to get in against a man that, you know, after the first fight…
Poirier: Your coach was right. I can’t forget, but I can forgive myself, you know, and I have.
McGregor: Yeah. I’m honoured to share the Octagon [with you] and we will do it again, alright? Good man. Thank you so much.
Poirier: Safe travels.
McGregor: Congratulations and enjoy everything.
Poirier: All the best to you.
McGregor: Thank you, and you.
