Boxing news: Anthony Joshua admission, Tyson Fury’s Wilder theory, Bob Arum refusal

Boxing news – Anthony Joshua revelation

Unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has revealed he felt completely written off by the public going into his rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr last December.

“I felt, and still stand by that today, that everyone had written me off,” Joshua said in an Instagram Live broadcast. “So I said ‘cool’. They’re telling me ‘man, Josh shouldn’t go in there for the rematch, he’s crazy.

“The best thing about Saudi Arabia was proving to myself that no matter what the idols tell me or the experts, no one can go against the gut feeling that I have.

“That’s why at the end of the fight there’s a clip where Eddie’s jumping, my manager Freddie’s jumping, and I’m kind of standing there. I remember when I said that when I win ‘everybody must bow to me’.

“So it was like my emperor moment. I said what I was going to do, so talk the talk, walk the walk.”

Boxing news – Tyson Fury’s Deontay Wilder theory

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury reckons Deontay Wilder has only activated his trilogy fight clause in order to get one last big payday.

I think that’s the reason he’s taking the fight, for the money

Tyson Fury on why Deontay Wilder exercised his trilogy fight clause

“I was surprised because it was a one-sided fight,” Fury told talkSPORT when asked for his reaction to Wilder pursuing a third fight “He didn’t win a second of that second fight, but in this game it’s a short game and a short career, and there’s an old saying – ‘We’ve gotta make hay while the sun shines.’

“And for Deontay Wilder at the age of 34, how many big fights out there are left for him after a domination like he had? ‘So I understand where he’s coming from. I understand that he has probably a lot of bills to pay.

“I don’t know the man’s personal circumstances, but from what I’ve seen of these American fighters and sportsmen, they always live a rockstar’s lifestyle, even though they’re not rockstars.

“They go through a lot of money quite quickly. Just look at Mike Tyson, he went through like a billion dollars or whatever he went through.

“So I’m sure that the money side of it is the tempting thing.

“I don’t think it’s too tempting to go in there and get an absolute beating like he did before, but he would be tempted by the amount of money that he would receive because they go through it quite quickly.

“I think that’s the reason he’s taking the fight, for the money.”

Boxing news – Bob Arum talks up Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury

Top Rank Boxing promoter Bob Arum has refused to rule out the prospect of Kubrat Pulev and Wilder stepping aside to allow Joshua and Fury to take part in a heavyweight title unification fight later this year.

“I suppose anything is possible,” Arum told BBC Radio 5 Live. “But Pulev has rights. He has entered into a contract. Wilder has a contract to fight Fury yet again.

“No promoter like me, Eddie Hearn or Frank Warren is going to violate a contract. So let’s take a step back here, we have to respect everybody’s rights.

“Is it possible that Pulev and Wilder step aside to let Fury and Joshua fight? Anything is possible but it’s up to them.”
