Many sports stars have not only found success during competition, but have also found love with each other away from the field of battle.
While some go on to have lasting relationships there are others who have seen them come to an end.
Some ended in awkward circumstances while others spilled out into drama viewed far and wide.
Here we take a look at some of our favourite sports stars who were previously in a relationship, but have now found love elsewhere.
Rory McIlroy & Caroline Wozniacki
Caroline Wozniacki and two-time PGA Tour champion Rory McIlroy were together from 2011 until 2014.
The 2018 Australian Open champion announced their engagement via Twitter on 1 January 2014.
However, some months later in May, it was announced that McIlroy had called off the engagement in a statement which read: "The problem is mine.
"The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.
"I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had.”
Wozniacki later revealed that McIlroy had ended the relationship through a brief phone call, and had not contacted her since.
Since their split the pair are now married, with Wozniacki tying the knot with former basketball player David Lee and McIlroy is married to a former PGA of America employee, Erica Stoll.
Reanne Evans & Mark Allen
Evans and Allen are bitter exes who turned rivals when they clashed at the British Open this summer.
The pair got together back in 2005 and had a child together, before splitting up in 2008.
It's understood Evans was seeking an increase on Allen's payments, said to be around £100-a-month. Allen's on-table earnings averaged £392,000 over the last four years.
They were embroiled in the child maintenance row at the time of the now infamous incident at the Crucible earlier this year.
Evans was working as a pundit for the BBC, who broadcast from the practice room between frames to provide their analysis.
She was preparing to go on air when Allen, who was getting ready for his next match, made a complaint that her presence was a distraction and she was asked to leave as a result.
Allen prevailed 3-2 in their match, which saw Evans snub his handshake before the game began.
Reece Topley and Elina Svitolina
In 2017 the fast bowler began dating the Ukrainian tennis star.
Describing her relationship at the time, Svitolina, who met the England star in the gym, said: “It’s good when someone is on the same page of sports and has bad times and good times as well, the same as me in tennis.
“We have so many things in common and it is very interesting that in other sports there are so many things we can speak about. It’s good that everything is very clear and you don’t need to explain a million times.”
However, the pair split in 2018 and the world number 14 is now married to fellow tennis player Gael Monfils.
Colin Lloyd & Deta Hedman
The 2005 World Matchplay champion was in a relationship with fellow darts player Deta Hedman in the 2000s.
Hedman, 62, was born in Jamaica and moved to the UK in 1973.
She became the first black woman to compete at the 2021 PDC World Darts Championship and was beaten 3-1 by Andy Boulton in the first round.
Hedman dominated women’s darts in the mid-90s but retired in 1997. She returned in 2002 but soon gave up the sport again when she separated from Lloyd, the former world No 1.
Grigor Dimitrov and Maria Sharapova
Dimitrov began dating Maria Sharapova in late 2012.
The pair only confirmed their relationship after the 2013 Madrid Open where the Bulgarian managed his first win against a world No. 1, beating Novak Djokovic.
They split in 2015 and at the end of that year, he started discreetly dating American singer Nicole Scherzinger, the lead vocalist of The Pussycat Dolls which ended in early 2019.
Since 2018, Sharapova has been in a relationship with British businessman Alexander Gilkes and the pair announced their engagement in December 2020.
