Serena Williams ghosted date by popping to bathroom and never returning

Serena Williams has revealed she once brutally ghosted a date by popping off to the bathroom before never returning. The tennis legend appeared on the Tonight Show earlier this week alongside famed host Jimmy Fallon.

The main topic of conversation was Williams' recent swan song at the US Open, before retiring from tennis after a remarkable 27-year career. Whilst appearing on the show the sporting great revealed she struggles with goodbyes, and hoped to retire quietly despite her worldwide status.

Host Fallon then likened her need to disappear off the tennis scene to somebody sneaking out of a party without saying goodbye, and to everybody's surprise Williams hilariously revealed she had in fact done that before on a date.

The 40-year-old said: "I actually did that on a date once," leaving Fallon as shocked as anybody in his hosting chair. "Yeah, well I wasn't having a great [time], it was years ago obviously. I wasn't having a great date so I just went to the bathroom!" Her story left the pair in stitches in front of the camera.

Williams bowed out earlier this month after losing to Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 in an emotional clash in the third of the US Open in New York.

Remarkably her final ever game smashed viewing records, after it became the most-watched tennis match in ESPN's 43-year history.

With tears in her eyes, the 23-time Grand Slam winner emotionally paid tribute to her father Richard and her mother as well as her famed sister Venus. She said: "Thank you Daddy, I know you're watching. Thanks Mom.

"I just want to thank everyone that's here, that's been on my side, so many years, decades. But it all started with my parents and they deserve everything, so I'm really grateful for them… These are happy tears I guess.

"And I wouldn't be Serena if it wasn't Venus so thank you Venus. She's the only reason that Serena Williams ever existed. It's been a fun ride, it's been the most incredible ride and journey I've ever had in my life.

"And I'm just so grateful to every single person that's ever said "go Serena" in life. I'm just so grateful because it got me here."
