One of handball's stars has been ruled out of the EHF Champions League Final4 following a freak injury.
Sander Sagosen, who has won multiple trophies in Germany, France, and Denmark, currently plays for THW Kiel in Germany. The side has qualified for Europe's biggest club event on June 18 and 19, along with Telekom Veszprem HC [Hungary], Lomza Vuve Kielce [Poland], and Barcelona [Spain].
But Sagosen won't be there after going down awkwardly in a recent club game against Hamburg. The centre back appeared in little trouble as he stepped to his right, jumped and offloaded a pass, making light contact with a defender as he released the ball.
But as he landed back down on his feet, Sagosen's knee bent back the wrong way. The 26-year-old left the arena immediately for treatment, as THW Kiel fans feared the worst.
Shortly after the incident on Sunday, pro-handball player Rasmus Boysen tweeted: "According to the team doctor of THW Kiel Sander Sagosen is out with a severe foot injury for between six and eight months."
And Boysen pointed out it's not just the European finals he'll now be absent from: "Unbearable! He [will] miss the Final4, first half of next season and maybe the World Championship in January 2023!"

Boysen had initially posted a video of the incident, and his followers immediately feared the worst. @fmishov reacted with: "Awful scenes… Unfortunately, I believe it's a very serious injury even though I hope for the best, but looking at it from more angles it's inevitable that besides the knee, his ankle is gone too."
@lowenauge1966 added: "Oh no. Get well soon for Sander. I hope it's not as bad as it looked." @StevieY82 added: "An ugly injury for Sander Sagosen, who is out for a long time with this."
The Champions League finale will take place at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. THW Kiel will play Barcelona for a place against Telekom Veszprem HC or Lomza Vuve Kielce the final.
