Tiger Woods has been left with gruesome leg, ankle and foot injuries after suffering a horror car crash in Los Angeles.
The golfing legend was rushed to hospital after being involved in a single-car accident at around 7am on Tuesday, which saw his vehicle hit a curb, strike a tree and smash through a sign before rolling over several times on a hillside.
When police arrived at the scene Woods was responsive, but he was immediately rushed to Harbour-UCLA Medical Centre to undergo emergency surgery.
The Chief Medical Officer at the trauma centre has issued an update on his injuries, revealing he sustained an open fracture in his lower leg as well as ankle and foot injuries.
Anish Mahajan said: “Mr Woods suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treating during emergency surgery.”
“Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia.
“Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins.
“Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”
An open fracture involves an open wound or break in the skin near the site of the broken bone, which occurs when a fragment of the bone breaks through the skin at the moment of the injury.
It requires different treatment than a closed fracture, as it is important to prevent infection at the site of the injury.

Woods’ surgical procedure would have also seen the wound, tissues and bone cleaned out as quickly as possible, as well as the fractured bone being stabilised as Mahajan described.
While the injuries are undoubtedly distressing, Woods can count himself fortunate that he made it out of the crash alive, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy Carlos Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said that Woods was wearing a seatbelt in the driver’s side of his Genesis SUV when he arrived on the scene, adding that the restraint “greatly increased the likelihood that it saved his life.”
He also claimed the sporting icon was “calm and lucid” and able to speak as he waited for firefighters to extract him from the wreckage.
